How to Shift Out of the Worry Network
Your brain has another network called the Task-Positive Network (TPN), which activates when you focus your attention on a concrete, external action.
The DMN and TPN operate like a balance. When one is active, the other quiets down.
To disengage an overactive Default Mode Network:
- Engage Sensory Working Memory: Focus on five physical sensations in your immediate room, such as the temperature of the air or the texture of your desk.
- Externalize Your Thoughts Through Writing: When you write down a racing thought into a structured prompt, you force your brain to switch from passive default daydreaming into active task focus.
- Engage in Focused Physical Movement: A brief walk, stretching, or focused breathing immediately activates sensory networks and quiets self-referential rumination.
